Hello friends,
I want to share a little practice that has been powerful in my own healing journey. It’s so simple that you might wonder, “Can it really work?” But trust me, it does.
It’s the affirmation: “I used to, but I don’t anymore.”
Coming Back Full Circle
I first began using this phrase several years ago while I was in the Disease and Disorder course in North Carolina. At that time, I began to struggle with kidney stones and ended up in the hospital four or five times during that training.
I still remember one of the physicians looking at me and saying, “Sometimes, some of us just have bad luck and have to deal with bad things.”
And something rose up inside me. In that moment, I said to them, “Not me.”
Every time they told me I was a chronic kidney stone carrier, I would respond: “Not anymore.” I began declaring: I used to get kidney stones all the time, but not anymore.
That was the first time I truly felt the power of this affirmation.
And here’s the truth: I haven’t been hospitalized since. Yes, I’ve had a few kidney stones over the years, but they’ve gotten fewer and fewer, smaller and smaller, easier and easier to deal with. That simple phrase has shifted my reality.
But it wasn’t until a few years later, when I was drowning in debt and desperate for a drastic change, that the words came back to me even stronger. I heard the voice say: “Just say —‘I used to, but not anymore.’”
So I did. And once again, the shift began.
How It Showed Up in My Life
When I brought this affirmation back into my daily practice, I started with money. I remember affirming:
- I used to struggle with money, but I now welcome financial flow with ease.
At first, I still had the same bills and responsibilities, but the energy started to shift. Instead of seeing lack everywhere, I began to notice opportunities. I took steps, and within a few months, my debt was gone.
Over time, I added other affirmations that I would like to share:
- I used to feel unsupported, but now I know the Universe always provides for me.
- I used to be in competition with others, but not anymore.
- I used to feel stuck, but not anymore—now I see opportunities opening all around me.
- I used to doubt myself, but not anymore—now I honor my wisdom and strength.
- I used to chase love, but not anymore—now I attract love by being my true self.
- I used to believe I was broken, but not anymore—I now know I am whole, healing, and complete.
And this year, I took it even deeper. There were some habits I really wanted to change—patterns that had me feeling stuck. I started working with this affirmation again, day by day, and things are shifting. Slowly but surely, I can feel the old weight lifting. I don’t have to force it. I just keep reminding myself: I used to, but I don’t anymore.
Why It Works
Here’s what I’ve learned about this little phrase:
- It honors the past without shame. We don’t need to fight it—we simply acknowledge it.
- It anchors us in a new identity. Our subconscious mind listens closely when we declare who we are now.
- It creates ease instead of resistance. Instead of struggling to “fix” something, we simply step into the truth that it’s already different.
Sometimes it takes a little time for the outside world to catch up—like my debt, which took a few months to clear. But other times, it happens almost instantly—like breaking a habit, which shifted in just a week or two.
Try It Today
Think of one thing you’re ready to release. Then speak it out loud:
I used to ______, but I don’t anymore.
Say it daily. Feel it. Watch how the energy shifts in your body, mind, and life.
