Are you conscious of your inner voice? Do you take notice of it? (By the way, I’m not referring to the person who criticizes you!) I’m referring to the one that softly whispers ideas and suggestions to you, the kind that the other voice may try to silence by exclaiming, “Are you crazy?” This necessitates stepping outside of our comfort zone, which must be avoided at all costs (even if the cost is living a life of mediocrity instead of the one of your dreams).
Unfortunately, the latter is the one that most of us are aware of and pay attention to. The gentler one, our intuition, is frequently overlooked (if we can even hear it at all). The tragedy here is that our intuition is the one who truly has our best interests at heart. Our shadow voice (the louder, more aggressive one) also cares about our well-being, but in a protective way.
What’s the harm in protecting us? I know you’re thinking it! It restricts us and, in the end, erodes our soul’s well-being. And, believe it or not, this isn’t good for our physical or emotional well-being! If you are unfulfilled on a soul level, you will gradually and imperceptibly develop a nagging feeling of general discontent, which can have a rippling effect on your mood, self-esteem, and, ultimately, your physical and mental health. But that’s a topic for another article…
If you listen to your intuition, it will gently push you beyond your comfort zone, but never further than you are capable of. It will both challenge and support you. It is always looking out for your best interests, on all levels: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It will not only gently nudge you in frightening directions that will yield enormous and unimaginable rewards, but it will also gently nudge you when it is time to stop or turn around.

If you’re not used to listening to your intuition, it will take time and practice to learn to do so. You may be unsure which voice is which at first (especially since your shadow voice often sounds very reasonable), and using your intuition is similar to using your physical muscles. You must use it on a regular basis for it to be in the desired shape.
So, how do you better understand your intuition? First and foremost, begin to be aware of any hunches, feelings, or ideas that arise. Take note of the voice that goes with it. Is it gentle, positive, and encouraging?
It’s more likely to be your shadow voice if it’s aggressive, domineering, or employs scare tactics. Is it a loud and threatening warning if you get a feeling of forewarning? (shadow). Or an obstinately knowledgeable one? (intuition).
The scary thing about trusting your intuition when it’s new to you is that it’s not based on logic, and what it suggests to you often cannot be justified logically. However, with practice and trust, you’ll learn that knowing something is the right thing to do is in your best interests. It will be easier to ignore your own and other people’s shadow voices (who will fear for your best interests on your behalf).
Starting small is the key to developing this essential trust in one’s intuition. If you’re not familiar with your intuition, don’t make life-changing decisions based on it (you might still be confusing your two inner voices). Allow your intuition to guide you with smaller decisions and wait for the gentle knowing feeling. Don’t expect an immediate response, but keep an eye out for it; it will come, and you’ll know when it does.
As you tune in more and more, you’ll notice that you suffer less and less from worry or anxiety. You’ll have faith that everything will work out fine, and you’ll often find that it works out even better than you could have imagined!
